The Most Popular Pet Names We've Embroidered

Every name that arrives in our workshop belongs to someone very loved. Some are familiar favorites like Luna, Charlie, and Daisy. Others make us smile, check the spelling twice, and wonder about the story behind them.

So after years of stitching names onto Christmas stockings, we counted them.

Luna was the most popular pet name in our orders, appearing in 20 separate orders. Charlie came next with 15, followed by Daisy with 14. But the real surprise was how little repetition there was at all: across 1,595 orders we found 1,533 different names, and 77% of them appeared exactly once.

We reviewed 2,635 personalized Christmas stockings from 1,595 orders placed between 2023 and 2025 — stockings made for dogs, cats, rabbits, lizards, and guinea pigs.

The Most Popular Pet Names in Our Orders

Each name was counted once per order, so a family ordering four stockings for one dog still counts as one appearance. We don't record whether a pet is male or female, so the split below follows how these names are usually given rather than the animals themselves.

Each column is a top ten of its own, so the cut-off differs between them. Just outside both: Sophie, Ivy, Chloe, Ellie, Hazel, and Winnie. And two that go either way — Boo and Mochi, seven orders each.

Our list lines up closely with the major U.S. pet name rankings, where Luna and Charlie also sit at the top. The difference is what it's built from: real orders, not registrations or survey responses. And because most of our stockings suit both cats and dogs, we didn't split the data into separate dog name and cat name rankings.

Cute Pet Names From Real Orders

"Cute" isn't a statistic, so this part is entirely subjective. Even so, some names were almost impossible not to love: Mochi (7 orders), Boo (7), Peanut (6), Bubbles (5), Bean (4), and then Pumpkin, Waffles, Sprinkles, Twinkie, Nugget, and Puddin.

Buttons deserves an honorable mention too — and it gets sweeter once you know that one multi-pet household ordered stockings for Bubbles, Buttons, Jinx, and Winx.

Food-Inspired Pet Names

Judging by our embroidery records, the kitchen is an excellent source of pet name ideas. We stitched names for pets called Mochi, Peanut, Maple, Bean, Snickers, Pumpkin, Mango, Waffles, Meatball, Gnocchi, Potato, Cake, Puddin, Peppermint, Tortilla, Toast, Gazpacho, and Reishi.

A few were genuinely popular — Mochi appeared seven times, Peanut six, Maple five. Others were completely one of a kind. We still don't know what kind of animal was named Gnocchi, but the name looks delightful in thread.

Human Names Are Pet Names Now

Many of the most popular pet names in our orders would fit just as naturally on a classroom attendance sheet. Charlie, Lily, Stella, Lola, Gracie, Leo, Lucy, Molly, Oliver, Sophie, Chloe, Ellie, Hazel, Louie, and Winnie all appeared multiple times.

This was one of the clearest patterns in the data. Pet owners aren't limiting themselves to Spot or Fluffy — they're choosing names they genuinely love, including names once reserved for people.

Some went further and gave their pets full names: Henry Higgins, Kylie Noel, Macyn Rose, Olive McGee, Katie Scarlett, Nova Ann. A full name on a small embroidered stocking has a wonderfully serious quality to it.

Unique Pet Names: The Ones We Still Remember

Popular names are interesting, but the one-of-a-kind names were the memorable ones: Church, Dragontail, Fibber, Disco, Howl, Ogo, Reishi, Tortilla, Toast, Duck, Aloy, Sokka, Achilles, Winx, and Jinx.

Dragontail sounds ready for an adventure. Church feels unexpectedly dignified. Disco requires no explanation at all.

Others likely came from a pet's personality, appearance, or an inside joke known only to that family — which is exactly why no list of unique pet names can ever be complete. The most original names are always personal.

Pet Names From Books, Games, and Mythology

Pop culture ran throughout the orders: Loki, Atlas, Ares, Athena, Achilles, Apollo, Merlin, Aloy, Sokka, Leia, Remus, Sirius, Tonks, Simba, and Taz. One household had pets named Oreo, Remus, Sirius, Tonks, and Zazu — food, Harry Potter, and Disney under a single roof.

Names for Two Pets and Multi-Pet Families

Orders with several names were the most fun to study, because they show how families build a whole naming system. Real combinations from our orders:

Because most of these names came from personalized Christmas stockings, we expected a flood of festive names. In reality, most people kept their pet's existing name. Still, we found a small holiday collection: Holly (4 orders), Merry (3), and — much more rarely — Joy, Santa, Star, and Angel.

Food names like Peppermint, Snickers, Cookie, and Ginger feel at home during the holidays too, even if they aren't strictly Christmas names.

What Surprised Us Most

It wasn't Luna finishing first — Luna tops national dog name and cat name lists year after year. The surprise was the variety: across 1,595 orders we found 1,533 different names and spellings, and more than three out of every four appeared only once.

Even familiar names came in variations — Lily and Lilly, Remi and Remy, Ozzie and Ozzy. For a personalized product those differences matter. We embroider the name exactly as the family writes it, because spelling is part of the name's identity.

Behind every Luna or Charlie there is also a Dragontail, a Gnocchi, a Church, a Duck, or a Potato.
